Advanced AML and CFT Compliance is a five-day, case-led programme for professionals who are responsible for more than the execution of individual controls. It focuses on the institutional decisions that determine whether an AML/CFT programme is genuinely risk-based, effective and defensible.
Participants work through a single fictional financial institution whose money laundering and terrorist financing risk profile becomes progressively more complex. Across the five days, they assess institutional risk, design a customer due diligence framework, evaluate transaction-monitoring controls, triage realistic alerts, assess correspondent and cross-border exposure, manage sanctions considerations and develop a defensible reporting and governance response. The course is designed for MLROs, senior compliance professionals, financial crime managers, risk leaders, auditors, supervisors and experienced practitioners who need to move from applying controls to evaluating and strengthening the programme as a whole.
An effective AML/CFT programme is not simply a collection of policies, customer forms and monitoring rules. It is an interconnected system of governance, risk assessment, customer controls, transaction monitoring, investigations, reporting, assurance and management oversight. Senior AML/CFT professionals must therefore be able to determine whether controls are proportionate to institutional risk, whether monitoring systems generate meaningful intelligence, whether alert volumes are manageable, whether investigations are adequately documented, and whether senior management has the information required to make informed decisions.
This advanced programme develops those capabilities through a continuous institutional case study. Participants are required to make decisions, defend their reasoning, challenge weak controls and produce management-level outputs rather than simply recall regulatory requirements.
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
This course is ideal for:
The programme is built around one continuous institutional case study. The institution's risk profile evolves across the five days, requiring participants to revisit earlier decisions as new information becomes available.
Advanced learning principle
Participants are not simply asked whether a control exists. They are asked whether it is appropriate to the institution's risk, whether it works in practice, what evidence demonstrates effectiveness and what should happen next.
Organisations sending staff on this training gain the abilities to:
Completing this course leaves participants with:
Practical Session: Conduct an enterprise AML/CFT risk assessment for a case institution, identify material risk exposures and determine appropriate risk appetite and mitigation priorities.
Practical Session: Design a risk-based AML/CFT compliance framework for the case institution, including governance responsibilities, customer-risk methodology, escalation points and control requirements.
Practical Session: Investigate a portfolio of simulated transaction-monitoring alerts, prioritise cases, identify suspicious activity indicators and determine appropriate escalation and investigation actions.
Practical Session: Assess the AML/CFT and sanctions risks within a case institution's correspondent banking portfolio and cross-border payment flows, then develop appropriate mitigation measures.
Practical Session: Conduct an AML/CFT programme gap assessment, make a suspicious transaction reporting decision, develop a prioritised remediation plan and present the findings to a simulated senior-management or board panel.
Advanced Capstone Assessment
The final assessment integrates the major components of the programme through a single institutional case study. Participants will be required to:
Practical Session: Complete the institutional AML/CFT case study and deliver a five-minute executive presentation covering material risks, control weaknesses, reporting decisions and priority remediation actions.
