Course Overview
This five-day advanced NVivo course is for people who already code in NVivo and want to get to genuine insight. It covers the full range of coding and matrix queries, crosstabs, autocoding and sentiment, framework matrices, the visualisation tools, and the use of cases, classifications and attributes to bring a quantitative lens to qualitative data for mixed-methods analysis.
Introduction
Most NVivo users never get past coding. They import their data, code it carefully, and then stall, because coding on its own does not produce a finding. It produces a well-organised pile of material. The insight lives one step further on, in the patterns across codes, the differences between groups, and the way themes intersect with one another and with what people actually said.
This course is about that step. It teaches the analytical machinery of NVivo: coding and matrix queries that reveal patterns, crosstabs that compare groups, autocoding and sentiment that accelerate early analysis, framework matrices that lay cases against themes, and the visualisations that turn all of this into something a reader can grasp at a glance. It also brings in the quantitative side, using cases, classifications and attributes to compare across demographics and integrate qualitative and quantitative evidence in a single project. Participants leave able to interrogate a coded project properly and produce findings with the depth and rigour that serious research, evaluation and policy work demand.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this programme, participants will be able to:
- Build and interpret coding and matrix coding queries.
- Use crosstab queries to compare groups and attributes.
- Apply word frequency and text search queries effectively.
- Use autocoding and sentiment analysis appropriately and critically.
- Build framework matrices to compare cases against themes.
- Use cases, classifications and attributes for mixed-methods analysis.
- Produce charts, maps and other visualisations for analysis and reporting.
- Capture, import and analyse web and social media data.
Who Should Attend
This course is designed for:
- Researchers who already code in NVivo
- Monitoring and evaluation specialists
- Mixed-methods researchers
- Data and research analysts
- Postgraduate students at analysis stage
- Consultants delivering qualitative and mixed-methods studies
- Anyone whose NVivo work has stalled at coding
Training Methodology
The course is query- and output-driven. Participants work with a pre-coded project so the focus stays on analysis, building queries, matrices and visualisations against real coded data and interpreting what they reveal.
- Worked query-building exercises
- Framework matrix construction
- Mixed-methods comparison exercises
- Visualisation and reporting outputs
- A final analysis brief produced from a coded project
Organizational Impact
Organisations that invest in this training for their teams will benefit from:
- Deeper, more credible qualitative findings
- Genuine integration of qualitative and quantitative evidence
- Faster analysis of large coded projects
- Clear visual outputs for reports and presentations
- Better return on the effort already invested in coding
- Stronger, more defensible conclusions
Personal Impact
Participants who enrol in this training will benefit from:
- Command of NVivo's analytical tools, not just coding
- The ability to find and defend patterns in the data
- Mixed-methods analysis skills
- Stronger visual and reporting outputs
- A higher-value, more advanced research skill

Frequently Asked Questions
About Advanced NVivo: Queries, Visualisation and Mixed Methods Training Course
It assumes you can already code. If you are new to NVivo, the foundational course is the right starting point.
A coding query retrieves everything coded in a certain way. A matrix query crosses two dimensions, for example a theme against participant groups, to reveal patterns. Both are covered in depth.
Yes. Using cases, classifications and attributes, you can attach quantitative variables to qualitative cases and compare across them, which is the core of mixed-methods work in NVivo and a central part of this week.
It lays your cases down one axis and your themes across the other, so you can read each participant's perspective on each theme in one grid. It is especially useful in evaluation and policy summaries.
Yes, briefly and critically. We cover where AI-supported summarisation helps and where the researcher's judgement must stay in control.
Yes, that is encouraged, though a pre-coded project is provided so everyone can follow the exercises.
Yes. The course covers the full visualisation set and, importantly, how to choose the right one for the question.
