Course Overview

This five-day course takes participants from semi-commercial poultry production into full commercial-scale layer and broiler farming. It covers housing and environmental control, advanced nutrition and feeding programmes, egg production and broiler growth management, and the biosecurity and health protocols required to run a commercial-scale operation reliably.

Introduction

Many poultry enterprises across Africa get stuck at semi-commercial scale, not because demand or capital is missing, but because the technical systems, housing design, feeding programmes, health protocols, that work for a few dozen birds start failing once flocks reach commercial scale, and the people managing them were never trained for that specific jump.

This course is built for that transition. It goes deep into the two production systems that dominate commercial poultry, egg-laying flocks and meat birds, and the housing, nutrition and flock management practices each requires at scale, so participants can run or advise a genuinely commercial operation, not just a larger backyard one. The course is built around the realities of commercial and semi-commercial poultry operations across Africa, working with locally available feed ingredients, variable power and water supply, and the climate and disease pressures common in the region, rather than a fully automated, temperate-climate commercial model.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this programme, participants will be able to:

  • Distinguish the production, housing and management requirements of layer and broiler systems.
  • Design poultry housing and environmental control appropriate to commercial-scale flocks.
  • Develop feeding programmes suited to different production stages and bird types.
  • Manage the egg production cycle to optimise laying performance and quality.
  • Manage broiler growth performance to optimise feed conversion and market weight.
  • Apply advanced biosecurity and health protocols for commercial-scale operations.
  • Plan hatchery, brooding and replacement stock management for continuous production.
  • Diagnose performance problems in a commercial flock and identify likely causes.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for:

  • Commercial and semi-commercial poultry farm managers and owners
  • Agribusiness professionals scaling up poultry operations
  • Poultry value chain and cooperative managers moving producers to commercial scale
  • Agricultural extension officers advising commercial poultry enterprises
  • Investors and technical advisors assessing commercial poultry operations
  • Hatchery and breeding stock managers

Training Methodology

The course is built around applying commercial production standards to real operations. It includes:

  • Facilitator-led sessions on layer and broiler production systems
  • Case studies from commercial and semi-commercial African poultry operations
  • Housing and environmental design exercises
  • Feeding programme design for layers and broilers
  • Flock performance diagnosis using real or realistic production data
  • A commercial scale-up plan developed across the week

Organizational Impact

Organisations that invest in this training can expect:

  • Higher, more consistent flock performance and productivity
  • Reduced losses from housing, nutrition and health failures at scale
  • Stronger technical capacity to manage or advise commercial poultry operations
  • More successful transitions from semi-commercial to commercial production
  • Better-informed investment decisions in poultry infrastructure
  • Stronger positioning for supplier and buyer relationships requiring consistent supply

Personal Impact

Participants who enrol in this training will benefit from:

  • Deep technical grounding in commercial layer and broiler systems
  • Confidence designing housing and feeding programmes at commercial scale
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve flock performance problems
  • A ready-to-use commercial scale-up plan
  • A stronger professional profile in commercial poultry and agribusiness

Course Outline

  • Layer versus broiler systems: differences in objectives and management
  • Housing design and environmental control at commercial scale
  • Deep litter, cage and semi-intensive housing systems
  • Ventilation, lighting and temperature management
  • Equipment and infrastructure planning

Practical session: Assess or design a housing plan for a defined commercial flock size.

  • Nutritional requirements across layer and broiler production stages
  • Feed formulation using locally available ingredients
  • Feeding programmes and feeding management practices
  • Managing feed costs at commercial scale
  • Water quality and access management

Practical session: Design a feeding programme for a layer or broiler flock at a defined stage.

  • The laying cycle and factors affecting egg production
  • Managing pullet rearing into lay
  • Egg quality, handling and grading
  • Extending and managing productive lay periods
  • Common causes of falling egg production

Practical session: Diagnose a simulated drop in egg production and recommend corrective action.

  • Broiler growth curves and performance benchmarks
  • Feed conversion ratio and how to improve it
  • Managing uniformity and reducing mortality
  • Timing production for market demand
  • Common causes of poor broiler performance

Practical session: Diagnose a simulated broiler performance problem and recommend corrective action.

  • Advanced biosecurity for commercial-scale operations
  • Vaccination programmes and health scheduling
  • Hatchery, brooding and replacement stock planning
  • Planning a transition from semi-commercial to commercial scale
  • Presenting a commercial scale-up plan

Practical session: Present a costed commercial poultry scale-up plan.

Certification

Certificate of Completion awarded on successful programme conclusion

At Strategic Revenue Africa, our certification goes beyond proof of attendance—it represents practical competence and measurable capability. Upon successful completion of our training programs, participants are awarded a Certificate of Completion from Strategic Revenue Africa, recognizing their ability to apply acquired knowledge in real-world settings. As an organization focused on architecting sustainable revenue and strengthening organizational performance, our certifications signal that participants are equipped with skills that drive results, not just theory.

Programme Inclusions

  • Course materials & workbook
  • Certificate of completion
  • Post-training support (6 months)

Prerequisites

This is an intermediate to advanced course. Participants should already have some practical experience with poultry production, whether managing a semi-commercial flock, advising producers, or working within a poultry value chain. It builds directly on the content covered in the Poultry Production and Value Chain Management course, though completing that course first is not a strict requirement. Participants are encouraged to bring details of a real or planned commercial flock to work with during the practical sessions.

  • It is recommended but not required. Participants with existing practical poultry experience can attend this course directly.

  • Both. Layer and broiler systems are covered as parallel tracks throughout the week, since many participants work with or are considering both.

  • Yes, particularly if you are planning the move to commercial scale. The course is built around that specific transition.

  • Yes. Several sessions use real or realistic flock performance data to practise diagnosing and solving production problems.

  • Hatchery, brooding and replacement stock planning are covered at a practical planning level, though this is not a specialised hatchery operations course.
