Course Overview

This five-day course equips professionals to manage, support or advise livestock enterprises across cattle, sheep and goats. It covers herd management, breeding and nutrition, animal health and disease control, and the marketing and value chain decisions that determine whether a livestock enterprise is commercially viable.

Introduction

Livestock, cattle, sheep and goats, underpin the livelihoods of a huge share of Africa's rural population and represent one of the largest asset classes many rural households hold. Yet livestock productivity across much of the continent remains far below its potential: herds are large in number but low in output, disease and poor nutrition erode value continuously, and marketing decisions are often made on habit rather than analysis of when and where an animal is worth most.

This course treats livestock production as a managed system, not a matter of herd size. It covers breeding and nutrition management that improve productivity, animal health and biosecurity that protect the herd, and the marketing and value chain decisions that convert a herd into real income, so participants leave able to support or manage livestock enterprises that are more productive and more commercially resilient.

The course is built around the realities of pastoral, agro-pastoral and mixed crop-livestock systems across Africa, working with locally adapted breeds, rangeland and grazing constraints, seasonal feed and water availability, and the disease pressures and market structures common in the region, rather than a temperate-climate, fully confined livestock model.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this programme, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the key production and management differences between cattle, sheep and goat systems.
  • Apply breeding and herd structure decisions that improve productivity over time.
  • Design feeding and grazing management approaches suited to seasonal and rangeland conditions.
  • Apply animal health, biosecurity and disease control measures appropriate to the production system.
  • Calculate the costs, offtake rates and returns of a livestock enterprise.
  • Identify and strengthen weak points in a livestock value chain, from breeding to market.
  • Apply record-keeping and basic performance monitoring for a livestock herd.
  • Assess market timing and buyer requirements for livestock and livestock products.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for:

  • Livestock and livelihoods programme staff
  • Agricultural extension officers and livestock advisory service providers
  • NGO and donor-funded project professionals working on pastoral or livestock programmes
