Course Overview
Modern dairy farming requires more than keeping cattle and collecting milk. Sustainable results depend on selecting suitable animals, establishing efficient production systems, balancing nutrition, maintaining herd health, managing reproduction and applying consistent milk hygiene practices. This programme provides a structured foundation for establishing, operating or improving a dairy enterprise, connecting animal welfare and production practices with milk quality and commercial viability.
Introduction
Successful dairy farming is built on a series of connected decisions: choosing a suitable production system, caring for healthy animals, providing the right feed, protecting milk quality and keeping reliable records. For new and developing dairy operators, understanding how these elements work together is the first step towards a productive, well-managed and commercially viable farm. This programme introduces the core practices and decision-making principles that underpin modern dairy operations.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this programme, participants will be able to:
- Evaluate dairy breeds, production systems and farm infrastructure against operational objectives, local climatic conditions and available resources.
- Apply appropriate feeding, watering, housing and animal welfare practices to support herd health and productive performance.
- Implement basic reproductive management, calf rearing and preventive herd health procedures in coordination with qualified animal health professionals.
- Establish hygienic milking routines and fundamental milk quality control procedures from collection to storage.
- Maintain farm records covering production, feeding, breeding, animal health and operational expenditure.
- Develop a practical farm improvement plan addressing productivity, resource utilisation, risk management and financial sustainability.
Who Should Attend
This programme is intended for:
- Aspiring dairy farmers and new entrants to commercial dairy production.
- Smallholder producers seeking to professionalise farm operations.
- New farm managers, herd supervisors and livestock enterprise staff.
- Agricultural extension personnel and community-based livestock programme teams.
- Individuals evaluating the feasibility of starting a dairy enterprise.
Training Methodology
Delivery combines expert-led sessions, case studies, guided exercises, group problem-solving, practical simulations at the end of every module, action planning and a guided dairy farm visit. The visit is used to observe relevant practices and connect course concepts to an operating environment. For this programme, the visit emphasis should be adapted to the course focus. Farm and facility visits are subject to availability, travel arrangements, host approval, occupational safety requirements and biosecurity protocols. Visits are observational unless practical activities have been expressly approved and supervised. Processing demonstrations must comply with applicable food-safety controls.
Organizational Impact
Upon applying the knowledge and skills gained from this programme, organisations will be better positioned to:
- Establish consistent herd management and milking procedures.
- Reduce preventable production losses associated with poor husbandry, inadequate feeding and weak hygiene practices.
- Improve animal welfare, milk handling and the reliability of farm records.
- Strengthen planning for feed, labour, veterinary services and seasonal production requirements.
- Build a foundation for improved profitability, future investment and adoption of modern dairy technologies.
Personal Impact
Upon completing this programme, participants will be better equipped to:
- Apply sound dairy husbandry practices and make informed routine farm management decisions.
- Recognise essential indicators of animal health, welfare, nutrition and reproductive performance.
- Maintain reliable production and herd management records.
- Implement hygienic milking procedures and identify factors that compromise milk quality.
- Assess farm strengths, weaknesses and immediate development priorities.
Course Outline
- Overview of intensive, semi-intensive, zero-grazing and pasture-based dairy systems.
- Assessing land, water, feed resources, climate, labour and proximity to milk markets.
- Dairy breed selection based on production potential, adaptability, fertility, longevity and maintenance requirements.
- Farm layout, housing, ventilation, drainage, feeding areas, calf pens and biosecurity zones.
- Farm development planning, resource requirements and phased implementation priorities.
- Dairy cattle physiology, including rumen function, digestion, nutrient utilisation, lactation, production cycles and body condition scoring.
- Cow comfort, welfare, heat stress, behavioural indicators, humane handling and responsible treatment practices.
Simulation: Participants assess a fictional farm profile, select a suitable production system and breed, identify farm-layout and cow-welfare risks, and present a basic establishment plan with key resource priorities.
- Nutritional needs of calves, heifers, dry cows and lactating animals.
- Roles of energy, protein, fibre, minerals, vitamins and water in dairy production.
- Evaluation of pasture, silage, hay and locally available feed ingredients.
- Feed storage, forage conservation, spoilage prevention and seasonal feed planning.
- Introduction to ration balancing, feed budgeting and the relationship between nutrition and milk yield.
Simulation: Participants prepare a simple seasonal feed plan from a set of feed resources, herd groups and budget constraints, then identify likely shortages and mitigation options.
- Heat detection, artificial insemination planning, pregnancy monitoring and calving preparation.
- Colostrum management, calf nutrition, housing, growth monitoring and weaning.
- Common herd health challenges, including mastitis, lameness, parasites and metabolic disorders.
- Preventive herd health calendars, vaccination and parasite-control planning with veterinary guidance.
- Isolation of sick animals, treatment records, withdrawal periods and responsible medicine use.
Simulation: Participants review a fictional herd-health log, identify priority cases, draft a preventive calendar and determine when veterinary escalation is required.
- Preparation of animals, handlers and milking equipment.
- Milking routines, udder hygiene, teat condition and contamination prevention.
- Principles of manual and machine milking, equipment cleaning and maintenance.
- Introduction to somatic cell counts, bacterial contamination, antibiotic residues, adulteration and spoilage.
- Milk handling, rapid cooling, clean storage, collection logistics and cold-chain fundamentals.
Simulation: Participants map a milking workflow, identify contamination points and design a corrective-action checklist for a milk-quality incident.
- Animal identification and records for milk yield, breeding, health and movement.
- Daily milk registers, feed inventories, labour allocation and expenditure records.
- Basic milk production costs, revenue per litre and gross operating margins.
- Losses associated with poor fertility, disease, feed wastage and rejected milk.
- Farm performance checklist, routine management calendar and prioritised improvement plan.
Simulation: Participants use sample farm data to calculate simple unit costs, identify avoidable losses and prepare a 30-day farm improvement action plan.
