This five-day course combines two complementary methodologies. Systems thinking gives participants the tools to understand why complex problems persist, tracing root causes, feedback loops and leverage points. Design thinking gives them a structured, human-centred process for generating and testing solutions. Together, they equip participants to diagnose complex organisational or programme problems properly, then design solutions people actually want.
Complex problems, low programme uptake, persistent service delivery gaps, recurring organisational dysfunction, are rarely fixed by more effort applied to the same approach. Two failure patterns are common: teams design solutions without understanding why the problem persists in the first place, or they understand the system well but produce solutions no one actually wants to use.
This course addresses both. Systems thinking gives participants a disciplined way to map a problem's structure, its actors, feedback loops and leverage points, before jumping to solutions. Design thinking then gives a structured, iterative process, empathise, define, ideate, prototype, test, for generating solutions grounded in what the people affected actually need. Used together, they produce solutions that are both structurally sound and genuinely adopted.
The exercises and case studies are drawn from public sector service delivery, NGO and donor-funded programming, and organisational challenges common across African institutions, so participants leave able to apply both methodologies directly to the complex problems they already face, not abstract corporate case studies.

Participants who enrol in this training will benefit from:
Practical session: Map the structure of a real, persistent problem from participants' own work.
Practical session: Identify and justify priority leverage points within the mapped problem.
Practical session: Conduct human-centred research and define a problem statement for the mapped issue.
Practical session: Build and test a low-fidelity prototype of a proposed solution.
Practical session: Present a complete problem diagnosis, prototype and test results to the group.
At Strategic Revenue Africa, our certification goes beyond proof of attendance—it represents practical competence and measurable capability. Upon successful completion of our training programs, participants are awarded a Certificate of Completion from Strategic Revenue Africa, recognizing their ability to apply acquired knowledge in real-world settings. As an organization focused on architecting sustainable revenue and strengthening organizational performance, our certifications signal that participants are equipped with skills that drive results, not just theory.
No prior training in systems thinking or design thinking is required. This course suits professionals responsible for designing programmes, services, products or organisational interventions. Participants are strongly encouraged to bring a real, current problem from their own work, since the entire course is built around applying both methodologies to it across the week.

Frequently Asked Questions
No. The course is built for programme, policy, strategy and management professionals, not designers, and introduces both methodologies from first principles.
Genuinely integrated. The week is structured so systems thinking diagnoses the problem in the first half, and design thinking generates and tests a solution in the second half, using the same real problem throughout.
Yes, and we strongly encourage it. The entire course is built around applying both methodologies to a real, current problem participants bring with them.
Both. The methodologies apply equally to public policy, service delivery, programme design and product development, and the case studies reflect that range.
You will build and test an actual low-fidelity prototype during the course, using real or realistic feedback from people affected by the problem.
Yes, the course is available in-person, live online, or in-house, and works particularly well for an intact team working on a shared real problem.
