Course Overview

This advanced course develops technical skills in drone mapping and UAV data processing, covering flight planning methodology, orthomosaic and elevation model processing, and integrating drone outputs into broader GIS workflows. Participants work through real drone imagery processing rather than flight operation alone, examining what separates a usable orthomosaic from a collection of georeferenced photos. The course closes with a processed orthomosaic and elevation model integrated into a GIS analysis for a defined area of interest.

Introduction

Drones have made very high resolution spatial data affordable for organisations that could never justify commercial aerial survey or satellite tasking costs, but flying a drone and producing genuinely usable, georeferenced spatial data from the resulting imagery are two very different skill sets.

African organisations across agriculture, construction, conservation and disaster response are adopting drone mapping rapidly, often mastering the flying while underinvesting in the data processing skills that turn raw imagery into analysis-ready outputs. This advanced course moves beyond drone piloting into the flight planning, orthomosaic processing and GIS integration skills that make drone mapping genuinely useful.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the components of an effective drone mapping workflow
  • Design flight plans matched to mapping objectives and terrain
  • Process drone imagery into georeferenced orthomosaics
  • Generate digital elevation and surface models from drone imagery
  • Assess processing quality and accuracy of drone-derived outputs
  • Integrate drone outputs into broader GIS analysis workflows
  • Manage ground control points for accuracy improvement
  • Evaluate common drone data processing errors and their causes
  • Advise institutions on drone mapping programme design

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for:

  • Precision agriculture and farm mapping staff
  • Construction and infrastructure monitoring staff
  • Conservation and protected area management staff
  • Disaster assessment and emergency response staff
  • Land surveying and cadastral mapping staff
  • Environmental monitoring programme staff
  • GIS analysts incorporating drone data into their work
  • Researchers using drone imagery for spatial studies

Training Methodology

The programme is delivered through facilitator-led hands-on sessions processing real drone imagery through to finished GIS-ready outputs, structured around progressive exercises rather than lecture alone. Each module closes with a short applied task so participants leave with working drone data processing skills rather than notes alone.

Organizational Impact

Organisations that send staff to this course can expect:

  • Drone investments that produce genuinely usable spatial data
  • Improved flight planning reducing wasted flights and reprocessing
  • Stronger orthomosaic and elevation model processing quality
  • Better integration of drone data into broader GIS and M&E systems
  • Reduced dependence on external processing services
  • Improved accuracy and reliability of drone-derived analysis
  • Increased in-house capability across precision agriculture, construction and conservation applications
  • A documented drone mapping workflow
  • Stronger overall return on drone technology investment

Personal Impact

Participants leave this course with:

  • Advanced technical skill in drone mapping and UAV data processing
  • Confidence to design flight plans matched to mapping objectives
  • Sharper orthomosaic and elevation model processing skills
  • Practical experience integrating drone outputs into GIS analysis
  • Stronger standing in drone mapping and spatial data discussions
  • A completed processed dataset for direct application
  • Improved ability to assess and troubleshoot processing quality
  • A specialist skill set distinguishing them within GIS and field teams
  • A foundation for advanced applications combining drone and satellite data

Course Outline

  • Components of an effective drone mapping workflow
  • Reviewing African drone mapping applications
  • Distinguishing drone piloting skill from data processing skill
  • Common drone mapping project design weaknesses
  • Understanding drone sensor types and their outputs
  • Assessing a drone mapping project for workflow completeness

Practical session: assess a drone mapping project for workflow completeness beyond flight operation alone.

  • Designing flight plans matched to mapping objectives

Certification

Certificate of Completion awarded on successful programme conclusion

At Strategic Revenue Africa, our certification goes beyond proof of attendance—it represents practical competence and measurable capability. Upon successful completion of our training programs, participants are awarded a Certificate of Completion from Strategic Revenue Africa, recognizing their ability to apply acquired knowledge in real-world settings. As an organization focused on architecting sustainable revenue and strengthening organizational performance, our certifications signal that participants are equipped with skills that drive results, not just theory.

Programme Inclusions

  • Course materials & workbook
  • Certificate of completion
  • Post-training support (6 months)

Prerequisites

Prior QGIS experience is expected, equivalent to completing a QGIS fundamentals course. Basic familiarity with drone operation is helpful but not required, since this course focuses on data processing rather than flight operation.
