Course Overview

This five-day course builds command of sustainable banking, climate risk and ESG integration in financial services. It covers the fundamentals of ESG and sustainable finance, physical and transition climate risk, green and sustainability linked lending, climate related disclosure, and climate stress testing and scenario analysis. Participants leave able to integrate climate and ESG considerations into credit, risk and strategy decisions.

Introduction

Climate risk has moved from a corporate social responsibility footnote to a mainstream financial risk that regulators, investors and increasingly customers expect banks to manage. A drought that destroys a harvest is credit risk for the bank that financed the farmer. A stranded fossil fuel asset is credit risk for the bank that financed the plant. African financial institutions face this reality with unusual intensity, both because the physical impacts of climate change are severe and because the continent needs enormous investment in the low carbon infrastructure of the future.

This course builds the skills to manage that reality with financial rigour rather than only good intentions. It covers the fundamentals of ESG and sustainable finance, physical and transition climate risk, green and sustainability linked lending, climate related disclosure, and the climate stress testing and scenario analysis increasingly expected by regulators and investors. Participants leave able to integrate climate and ESG considerations into credit assessment, risk management and institutional strategy, grounded in the realities African institutions face rather than only global frameworks.
