Course Overview

This five-day course builds a clear, working understanding of how banks operate and are managed, from their products and daily operations to the balance sheet, the core risks they run and the drivers of performance. It is built for the many banking professionals who know their own function well but have never seen how the whole institution fits together. Participants leave able to read a bank's numbers, see how decisions in one area ripple across the rest of the institution, and contribute more effectively wherever they sit within it.

Introduction

Banks sit at the centre of every economy, turning deposits into credit and payments into the working capital of commerce. They are also among the most complex institutions to run. A bank must serve customers, price and manage risk, satisfy regulators and still earn a return, all from a balance sheet that can move from healthy to fragile faster than almost any other kind of business. Many people who work inside a bank know their own corner of it well, a branch counter, a call centre, a credit desk or a finance team, but have never been shown how the parts connect into a single, coherent institution.

This course provides that whole picture, grounded in the realities of banking in Africa, from long established commercial banks to the rapid growth of digital and mobile financial services. It works through the role and structure of banks, their main products and daily operations, the anatomy of the bank balance sheet, the core risks that every bank manages, and the levers that drive performance and profitability. Participants leave able to explain how a bank earns, lends, manages risk and creates value, to see clearly how their own role connects to the wider institution, and to bring a more informed, more strategic perspective to their work.
