Course Overview
This five-day advanced course is for teams and project leads who analyse qualitative data together. It covers collaborative working in NVivo through Collaboration Cloud and Server, building and maintaining a shared codebook, checking coding consistency and inter-rater reliability, merging projects, and managing large, multicoder qualitative projects so they stay rigorous and transparent.
Introduction
Qualitative analysis is hard enough alone. Done by a team, it introduces a new set of problems that have nothing to do with the data: coders interpret the same code differently, work gets done in separate files that will not merge cleanly, decisions made by one person are invisible to the rest, and by the end no one is sure the analysis is consistent. On large projects across multiple sites and languages, which is the norm in African research and evaluation, these problems compound until the findings cannot be trusted.
This course is about solving them. It covers the practical mechanics of working together in NVivo, through Collaboration Cloud for distributed teams or Collaboration Server on site, and the discipline that makes collaborative analysis rigorous: a shared codebook everyone applies the same way, coding comparison and interrater reliability to measure and improve agreement, clear documentation of decisions, and sound project management across coders and sites. It treats disagreement between coders not as a failure but as something to surface and learn from. Participants leave able to run a large qualitative project across a team and produce findings that are consistent, transparent and credible.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this programme, participants will be able to:
- Plan and structure a collaborative qualitative project.
- Work together in NVivo using Collaboration Cloud or Server.
- Build and maintain a shared codebook.
- Brief and align a team of coders.
- Run coding comparison queries and interpret inter-rater reliability.
- Use the Kappa coefficient and agreement measures appropriately.
- Merge projects and manage versions cleanly.
- Lead a large, multi-site qualitative project to credible findings.
Who Should Attend
This course is designed for:
- Research and evaluation team leads
- Senior monitoring and evaluation specialists
- Project managers running qualitative studies
- Consultants coordinating teams of coders
- Academic team leaders and supervisors
- Organisations scaling up qualitative work
- Anyone managing analysis across more than one coder
Training Methodology
The course is run as a team project. Participants work as coders on a shared dataset, then step into the lead role, so they experience both sides of collaborative analysis and the management discipline that holds it together.
- Collaborative project setup in NVivo
- Shared codebook development
- Coding comparison and reliability exercises
- Project merge and version-management practice
- A final collaborative analysis run as a team
Organizational Impact
Organisations that invest in this training for their teams will benefit from:
- Consistent coding across a team
- Measurable, defensible reliability in analysis
- Large qualitative projects delivered without chaos
- Transparent, documented analytical decisions
- Findings that survive scrutiny
- The ability to scale qualitative work with confidence
Personal Impact
Participants who enrol in this training will benefit from:
- The ability to lead collaborative qualitative analysis
- Command of NVivo's collaboration tools
- Skills in reliability and consistency checking
- Strong project-management habits for analysis
- A rare, high-value senior research skill

Frequently Asked Questions
About Team-Based Qualitative Analysis with NVivo Training Course
It is the senior course in the series, aimed at people leading or coordinating analysis across a team rather than working alone.
Yes, strongly recommended. You should be comfortable coding and analysing before attending.
It is a measure of how consistently different coders apply the same codes. It matters because consistency is what makes team findings credible, and the course covers how to measure and improve it.
It is a statistic that measures agreement between coders beyond what chance alone would produce. The course shows how to run it in NVivo and, more importantly, how to interpret and act on it.
Collaboration Cloud hosts the project in the cloud for distributed teams, while Collaboration Server keeps it on your own infrastructure. The course covers both and when each suits.
Yes. The course is run as a collaborative project, so you experience both coding within a team and leading one.
Yes. It is built with large, multi-site work in mind, which is common in African research and evaluation.
