Fraud risk assessment and detection training teaches internal auditors, risk officers and compliance staff to design a fraud risk assessment, build red flag indicators and structure a detection programme that catches fraud before losses compound. Working through a live institutional case study showing early fraud indicators buried in routine data, participants build a fraud risk register and a detection programme covering the institution's highest-risk processes. Participants move from mapping the case study institution's fraud exposure to presenting a complete detection programme, working the same institution from a Day 1 risk mapping exercise through to a Day 5 programme presentation. The red flag design work is grounded in real transactional and behavioural indicators rather than a generic checklist, so participants leave able to adapt indicators to their own institution's processes. It sits alongside Forensic Audit and Investigation Techniques and Financial Statement Fraud Examination in Strategic Revenue Africa's fraud and financial crime series, and works well as the foundation course before either of those more specialised programmes.
Most fraud losses are not caught by chance; they are caught by institutions that built the capacity to look for fraud systematically before it happened, rather than react to it after a loss is discovered. Yet many African institutions still rely on ad hoc reporting or external audit to surface fraud, missing years of activity that a structured risk assessment and detection programme would have flagged early.
This course builds the practical skills internal audit, risk and compliance staff need to assess fraud risk across an institution's processes and design a detection programme that actually catches emerging schemes. Working through a live case study institution where early fraud indicators are buried in routine data, participants leave having built a fraud risk register and detection programme themselves, not reviewed one built by someone else.
By the end of the programme, participants will be able to:
This programme is suitable for:
Case-led delivery built around a single institutional case study where early fraud indicators are buried in routine transactional data, developing across all five days from an initial risk mapping to a complete detection programme. Day 1 opens by mapping the institution's fraud exposure across key processes; the case then carries through designing red flag indicators for the institution's highest-risk schemes, building a prioritised fraud risk register, applying data analytics to surface anomalies in the case study's own transactional data, and a closing exercise presenting a complete fraud risk assessment and detection programme. The data analytics exercise works with a realistic dataset containing planted anomalies, so participants practise finding genuine signals rather than reviewing a pre-flagged example. Cohorts typically bring together internal auditors, risk and compliance officers and finance staff designing controls, so the detection programme is tested against both a control-design and an investigative perspective.
Organisations that invest in this training strengthen their ability to:
Upon completion of this programme participants will:
Practical Application: Map the case study institution’s fraud exposure across its key processes and identify priority areas requiring further assessment.
Practical Application:
Develop a set of practical red-flag indicators for the case study institution’s highest-risk processes.
Practical Application: Develop and prioritise a fraud risk register for the case study institution.
Practical Application: Analyse the case study institution’s transactional data and identify potential fraud indicators requiring further review.
Final Practical Application: Present a complete fraud risk assessment and detection programme for the case study institution.
At Strategic Revenue Africa, our certification goes beyond proof of attendance—it represents practical competence and measurable capability. Upon successful completion of our training programs, participants are awarded a Certificate of Completion from Strategic Revenue Africa, recognizing their ability to apply acquired knowledge in real-world settings. As an organization focused on architecting sustainable revenue and strengthening organizational performance, our certifications signal that participants are equipped with skills that drive results, not just theory.
A basic understanding of internal controls, auditing, risk management, finance or organisational processes is recommended. No prior fraud investigation experience is required.

Frequently Asked Questions
No, this course focuses on risk assessment and detection design rather than investigation technique. Forensic audit staff are welcome, but so are internal auditors and risk officers with no forensic background.
The course covers fraud risk assessment and detection principles across major fraud typologies, including procurement, payroll and asset misappropriation, rather than deep technical training in any single scheme.
Yes, participants apply data analytics techniques to the case study institution's data on Day 4, though the course teaches the analytical approach rather than training on a specific software platform.
Yes, external auditors assessing fraud risk as part of a financial statement audit benefit from the same risk assessment and red flag design skills.
This course focuses on assessing fraud risk and designing detection before fraud is confirmed, while Forensic Audit and Investigation Techniques covers investigating a fraud once it is suspected or discovered.
