Gender shapes who benefits from a programme and who is left behind, yet too often it is treated as an afterthought rather than designed in from the start. This programme builds the capability to mainstream gender and design programmes that genuinely advance equality. Participants work through gender analysis, the design of gender responsive programmes, gender responsive budgeting, and the measurement of gender results, grounded in the African context where gender gaps in income, voice and opportunity remain wide and where commitments to equality must be turned into practical programming.
A programme that does not consider gender does not become neutral. It usually reinforces the inequalities already present, reaching men more easily than women, or overlooking the different needs, constraints and risks that people face because of their gender. Mainstreaming gender is not about adding a women's component at the end. It is about understanding those differences from the outset and designing so that everyone benefits.
This course equips government, development and NGO staff to do that work in practice. It moves from gender analysis through responsive design and budgeting to measurement, with attention to the African realities that shape what equality programming must address. The aim is practical capability to mainstream gender across the programme cycle and to show, with evidence, that it made a difference.
By the end of this programme, participants will be able to:
